Pavement Licence for Tables and Chairs

From the 23rd July 2020 you can now apply for a temporary pavement licence from East Herts Council. This will allow you to place tables and chairs (removable furniture) on the public highway so that you can have more outside seating.

The Government have made this a streamlined and cheaper process to allow businesses, such as cafes, restaurants and bars, to secure these licences in time for the summer. Where they are deemed to have been granted, allow these licences are to remain in place for a year but not beyond 30 September 2021.

Apply for a temporary pavement licence

To apply for a temporary pavement licence you must do the following:

  • Complete the Pavement Licence Application form and email it to East Herts, including the other required documents
  • Make payment of £100 either by phone or by requesting a call back.

You will also need to supply supporting documents, including:

  • Valid Public Liability Insurance Certificate to the sum of at least £5 million
  • A scale plan of the area (showing the location of all items to be placed in the licensed area)
  • A location plan (showing both the area to be licensed and the premises relating to the application outlined in RED).
  • A copy of your completed public notice, this must be displayed on the premises for 7 days starting the day after the application is submitted (A template notice can be downloaded from East Herts website).
