East Herts have received Government funding specifically for Covid Marshals across town centres in the area. They will be in Bishop’s Stortford from this week we have been advised. They will be working both with the public and businesses to ensure all parties are adhering to the current guidance. If they see you in your premises they may pop in.
We have received some further information from East Herts to explain a little further their role:
What are Covid-Marshals?
East Herts Council has introduced a team of Covid marshals to support local people and businesses understand and stick to the national Covid guidance and requirements which are all aimed at driving down the Covid infection rate and keeping everyone safe.
The marshals will be out talking to people and businesses across East Herts and can be recognised by their high-viz jackets. The individuals are a mixture of existing staff and from a company called HK Security, a company experienced in similar work and marshalling public events, who have been awarded a contract specifically for this work, based on their experience.
What is their role/ purpose?
The marshal exist to help businesses to comply with the regulations and resolve any queries or issues that arise. At the same time, the marshals will be reminding the public of the importance of maintaining social distancing, wearing face masks and frequently sanitising or washing their hands. They will report concerns / issues to Environmental Health or the Police where appropriate to investigate further.
Where will be they based?
The marshals will work across the five market towns (not all towns will be covered each day) and, at present, we have arranged for them to work three days a week – Mondays. Thursdays and Saturdays. This will be kept under review and East Herts Council is liaising with the police and town councils so as to be evidence-led in our approach
Where has the money come from and why couldn’t the monies be used for something else?
East Herts were awarded grant funding to be specifically used for this work. Other councils across the country were also awarded similar amounts based on their populations. The money cannot be spent on anything else.
Are the marshals able to give out fines?
No. the marshals have no powers of enforcement and can only advise businesses and residents.
What will be the marshals approach be?
They will be calm, professional, friendly and supportive.
