Coffee Ground Recycling Scheme

Scheme Overview

The introduction of a coffee ground recycling scheme for businesses is an exciting new initiative being investigated by the BID. It can bring numerous benefits, both environmental and economical. We are currently in the research and planning stage, including understanding best practices and potential challenges.

The first task is to identify businesses in the BID area that generate significant coffee waste and assess their willingness to participate in the scheme. Knowing the amount of coffee grounds produced by these businesses is essential for calculating the likely cost of haulage and will guide the next stage of planning and feasibility.

What are the benefits?

Coffee grounds are a significant source of organic waste in many businesses, especially in cafes, restaurants, and offices where coffee consumption is high. Disposing of this wet and heavy product can be costly, while also contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily methane, when disposed of in landfills, as they decompose anaerobically. By recycling coffee grounds, businesses can divert this organic waste from landfills, reducing their environmental impact and helping combat climate change.

Recycling coffee grounds can help businesses save on waste management expenses. The company we are talking to can turn this waste product into eco-friendly fire logs, referred to as ‘Coffee Logs’ for wood burners.

The used coffee grounds collected from BID businesses will then be recycled into this winter fuel, helping to reduce waste and benefit the environment generally. Great for your business’s sustainability credentials too!
