PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! Letter from the organisers, Bishop’s Stortford Town Council, to town centre business managers/owners regarding road closures, diversions and free parking option.
Dear Business Managers/Owners,
The annual Bishop’s Stortford Christmas Fayre taking place on Saturday 6 December 2025 from 09.30 – 16.30 on North Street, Potter Street, Market Square and South Street. This free event will include activities for all the family such as live music and performances, a fun fair, and much more. The Fayre incorporates the regular weekly Saturday Market and the Farmers and Craft Market, as well as specialised festive stalls.
The Fayre is a major event throughout the town centre which many people are expected to attend and it would not be possible without road closures. Road closures will be in force on 6 December from 06.00 to 19.00 on North Street, Potter Street, South Street up to the junction with Station Road, High Street up to Basbow Lane and Market Square with access only available to pedestrians. Ingress and egress will therefore be limited to pedestrians and emergency vehicles only.
During the same period the ‘One Way’ system will be suspended on certain roads, allowing for vehicles to drive in both directions. This will apply to Church Street, Water Lane and Barrett Lane.
Also during the same period Church Street, Apton Road, Newtown Road, Water Lane and Barrett Lane will have a weight restriction of 7.5 tons.
Diversions will be in effect to divert traffic around the closed area.
We appreciate road closures can cause some inconvenience. We do, of course, endeavour to minimise both the level of inconvenience and the number of people affected, but it is not always possible to eliminate it completely.
Timings for the event are as follows:
- Road closures, restrictions and diversions: 06.00 – 19.00
- Christmas Fayre: 09.30 – 16.30

Should full BID members wish to have a stall on Christmas Fayre then the Town Council are providing a special BID discount as follows:
Standard 3m x 3m pitch price £65 – BID discounted price £40
Catering pitch 3m x 3m £110 – BID discounted price £85

Please be aware that it is not permitted to have unlicensed stalls on the pavement outside of the shops on Christmas Fayre as this poses a health and safety risk to pedestrians.
Please advise staff and customers that free all-day parking will be available at Northgate End Car Park, courtesy of East Herts District Council. We hope this helps address any parking and access issues on the day.
