As part of the Backing Business support available to businesses in the BID, we are pleased to offer a number of training courses in November, all taking place in the town centre. These are exclusively for BID businesses and are funded by the BID so they are free for to attend for you.

HR Essentials for SME’s / Thursday 3 November / 8.30 – 10.30
Join Kimberley Wallace, Senior HR Consultant from Nockolds HR, in a free seminar to learn about and discuss a HR essentials checklist that businesses should be carrying out when they employ their first staff. Topics discussed will include:
- Employment status – the differences between self-employed, workers and employees
- How to recruit your first staff – adverts, process, interviews
- Essential actions for employing your first staff – including insurance, HMRC, right to work and business drivers
- New starter documentation checklist – including contracts and handbooks
- How to manage performance – probations, performance issues, ongoing monitoring and appraisals
- Dismissing staff fairly
- Avoiding discrimination
This seminar will be of interest to:
- Business owners / directors / senior managers
- Businesses thinking about employing staff for the first time
- Businesses with small staff numbers wanting to ensure they are meeting essential employment requirements
Emergency First Aid at Work / Monday 7 November / 9.00 – 4.30pm
This one-day course will be delivered by local experts Pegasus Health & Safety. The day will cover key first aid including:
- How to assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
- Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
- Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)
Fire Marshal / Thursday 17 November / 9.30 – 12.30
Recommended for persons responsible for safe evacuation of a building, this course will be delivered by local experts Pegasus Health & Safety. The half day course will cover practical work including application of Extinguishers and a Fire Drill Exercise. It will also include:
- Understanding Fire
- Regulatory Reform Order
- Duties of a Fire Marshal
- Fire-Fighting Techniques
- Extinguishers – Types & Use
- Burns – First Aid Treatment
Level 1 Award in Food Safety in Catering / Thursday 17 November / 1.00 – 3.30
Food hygiene training is now a requirement for all people who work in the food industry. The Level 1 awards are sector specific and the training programme has been developed to allow courses to be tailored to meet the needs of staff working in catering, manufacturing or retail environments. This course, run by Pegasus Health & Safety, is suitable for a variety of candidates, including new employees with minimal or no prior food safety knowledge, employees handling low-risk or wrapped food or those who work front of house, such as waiting or check out staff, as well as back of house such as kitchen porters or warehouse staff. It will include:
- Food Safety (food hygiene, hazards, responsibilities)
- Personal Hygiene
- Cleaning
- Contamination
Making Videos for Instagram / Monday 21 November / 9.30 – 11.30
Join Will Alderton from JJD Social and James Garrett, video producer and trainer from HNE Media for an introductory workshop to get you started making videos for Instagram. In this hands on workshop Will and James will show you how to create quick and visually appealing video content for social media. The workshop will help you to brainstorm ideas for video content to get you started on your video journey and to harness the power of video!
