From Friday 24 July shoppers will be required to wear a face covering when in shops and supermarkets. The Government guidance is now out and we recommend retailers familiarise themselves with this ahead of the start date.
Some key points to be aware of:
- Face coverings are to be worn in shops and supermarkets. At the moment this does not include on the street.
- Face coverings are not PPE masks, but they should cover nose and mouth securely. They can be a scarf, bandana, religious garment or hand-made cloth covering.
- It is NOT compulsory for shop or supermarket staff to wear face coverings, although employers should consider recommending their use where appropriate to ensure they are Covid Secure.
- Children under 11 are excluded
- Certain disabilities are excluded – you are advised to treat this very carefully – be aware of hidden disabilities. More information on this can be found here.
- You can ask someone to remove their mask for the purpose of age identification.
- The liability lies with the individual to wear a face covering, the shop has no responsibility to ensure their customers are compliant.
- This is for an indefinite period.
- Police have the power to fine people, £100 or £50 if paid within 14 days.
